Verde Valley Birding

Birding is a favorite activity while relaxing at Sedona Verde Valley's Luna Vista Bed and Breakfast. Observe a community of hummingbirds, quail, roadrunners, colorful peacocks, soaring eagles and red tail hawks from Luna Vista Bed & Breakfast patios. Delight in the Verde Valley's Riparian foliage and fauna along its creeks and rivers. The Verde Valley is bordered by Sedona to the north, Camp Verde - Rimrock to the southeast and Cottonwood - Clarkdale to the southwest, all possessing several waterways and wetland areas.

The Verde River, Beaver Creek and Oak Creek areas serve as the winter home of the Bald and Golden Eagles. About 60 bald and golden eagles, varying in age, migrate south through the Mountain States corridor from the upper U.S. and Canada to Arizona each year. The scenic Verde Canyon is respite to almost half of this amazing migrant population in addition to one half of all North American bird species. This bird watcher's paradise has led to the designation of a large segment of the Verde River corridor as an Important Bird Area (IBA) - the first and largest in Arizona!Dove

During the winter, Montezuma's Well is a stopover for various waterfowl. It's not uncommon to see American Wigeons, Coots, Mallards, Ruddy ducks, Cinnamon Teal, Gadwalls, and even an occasional Canada Goose.

During the spring or summer you may see an abundance of native or visiting feathered friends. including the American Robin, Bluebirds, Roadrunner, Red-tailed Hawk, American Kestrel, Great Horned Owl (a year-round resident that lives in Montezuma's Well's inner walls), Common Raven, Belted Kingfisher, Black Phoebe, Canyon Wren, Cardinal, Gambel's Quail, Gila Woodpecker, Great Blue Heron, Lesser Goldfinch, Mourning Dove and Red-Shafted Flicker.Owl

Although various areas of the Verde Valley offer glimpses of a wide variety of birds throughout the year, bird and nature enthusiasts are sure to enjoy the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival held each year in the Spring. The Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood plays host to the festival, usually held in April.
