Verde Valley Birding
The Verde River, Beaver Creek and Oak Creek areas serve as the
winter home of the Bald and Golden Eagles. About 60 bald and golden
eagles, varying in age, migrate south through the Mountain States
corridor from the upper U.S. and Canada to Arizona each year. The
scenic Verde Canyon is respite to almost half of this amazing
migrant population in addition to one half of all North American
bird species. This bird watcher's paradise has led to the
designation of a large segment of the Verde River corridor as an
Important Bird Area (IBA) - the first and largest in Arizona! During the winter, Montezuma's Well is a stopover for various waterfowl. It's not uncommon to see American Wigeons, Coots, Mallards, Ruddy ducks, Cinnamon Teal, Gadwalls, and even an occasional Canada Goose.
During the spring or summer you may see an abundance of native or
visiting feathered friends. including the American Robin, Bluebirds,
Roadrunner, Red-tailed Hawk, American Kestrel, Great Horned Owl (a
year-round resident that lives in Montezuma's Well's inner walls),
Common Raven, Belted Kingfisher, Black Phoebe, Canyon Wren,
Cardinal, Gambel's Quail, Gila Woodpecker, Great Blue Heron, Lesser
Goldfinch, Mourning Dove and Red-Shafted Flicker. Although various areas of the Verde Valley offer glimpses of a wide variety of birds throughout the year, bird and nature enthusiasts are sure to enjoy the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival held each year in the Spring. The Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood plays host to the festival, usually held in April. |
